Public transport is well developed with ten tram and six trolleybus routes, as well as numerous routes served by buses. Don't miss the opportunity to view the city suspended between two babushki! Although thorough, public transport is slow and frighteningly overcrowded, especially during rush hour. For a trip back in time, take the tram: the rails in use now were first laid in 1895 and still follow routes designed for Konigsberg. Tickets can be bought from the conductor on the tram (she's the one with the purse overflowing with tickets) or singly or in books of ten from most kiosks. Ticket prices can hardly be expressed in Western currencies as they are so low. Theoretically, you can be fined 10% of the minimum monthly wage for riding without a ticket. Express buses follow the same routes as normal buses but make less stops on their way to their final destinations.
